Identifying the Vision for Your Kitchen

When it comes to kitchen design and kitchen layout, keep in mind that you’re not just choosing cabinets or countertops or even colors.

You’re thinking about the functionality, flow, and organization of one of the most critical rooms in your home. Whether you consider your project to be a kitchen remodel, kitchen renovation, or kitchen redesign, our dedicated and experienced staff can work with you to develop a plan and work towards a thoughtful kitchen design and layout.

Kitchen Design & Layout Process

Consultation Meeting

To get started, we’ll have an initial conversation either by phone, video conference, or at our office – whichever you prefer. We’ll go through the basics of your vision and design preferences and describe to you the typical process from start to finish.

Developing Your Vision

This can happen at the Consultation Meeting or in a follow up meeting. We recommend you bring the dimensions of your space, current photos, and any ideas you may have from magazines, Pinterest, home improvement shows, or other online resources. Bring as much or as little as you desire, reflective of the level of vision you have.

Some people don’t have a strong or well-defined vision. This is completely fine! We can provide ideas to inspire. Other people have a clear, detailed vision of what they want. We have found that most people fall somewhere in between. Regardless, we can work with you wherever you fall on that spectrum.

Selecting Appliances

Next we’ll get more specific with the major appliances to ensure there is sufficient space for the models you choose and that there is a cohesive aesthetic consistent with your vision. We work with multiple suppliers and have a wide variety of kitchen appliance brands to choose from. Click here to learn more!

Designing Your Kitchen

Once we have a better understanding of your starting point – your vision, key elements, and other inspiration you’re drawing from – we can begin the design process.

It starts with assessing your current kitchen and identifying what works and what doesn’t. You may choose to keep some existing elements like a counter, a dishwasher, or some aspect of the layout that is functioning well. Or you may be interested in a complete renovation where we start from scratch. We’ll also discuss your budget at this stage, as that will influence all future decisions.

Design & Layout Options

Depending on the size of your kitchen, there will likely be opportunities to explore layout options, where major elements can be moved around. All options will take into account workflow, functionality, convenience, and aesthetics. In other cases, there may only be one location that works for one or more major element, such as the refrigerator, so we would build off of that known location.

Finalizing Details

Once you have picked your favorite kitchen design and layout option, we can dive deeper into design choices. This would include cabinetry styles, fixtures, finishes, lighting, and even decorative elements. We would also work with you to identify the best surface materials to fit your vision and budget, such as countertops, backsplashes, flooring, tims, and wall accents. Once again, there is room to explore options for these design choices. We utilize software, catalogs, and other imagery to help you visualize these options in the space.

Construction Drawings

Our skilled designers will then create a draft design based on all of these decisions. We’ll double check all dimensions to make sure everything fits perfectly. Next we’ll show you some digital renderings of the completed design for your kitchen remodeling project. You’ll have the opportunity to make final revisions before we move to creating construction drawings.

Our desig
ners will work with you through the entire process of construction and installation – one of the main benefits of the Design-Build model. So you can have confidence that it will be done right and be consistent with the agreed upon design plan and budget.

Now that you’ve thought about all that’s involved in this process, are you excited yet? We love our jobs, so we’re always excited to take on a new and unique project. Give us a call and we can talk through a partnership that works best for you!

Creating a Cohesive Aesthetic

Sometimes customers have a key element in mind that will influence the design of everything else in the kitchen. Whether it be a sleek, multi-function faucet, a striking countertop, or signature cabinetry doors, we can help you find that starting point and work to build everything out from there. Or perhaps you don’t have that key element in mind and you want to aim for an overall look and feel. We can build it all out that way as well, ensuring that the overarching vision applies to the remaining details, big and small.

Here are some examples of overall style that customers often express as the starting point for their vision:

  • galley kitchen
  • modern kitchen / modern style
  • country kitchen
  • rustic kitchen / rustic style
  • European design
  • black and white kitchen or two-tone kitchen
  • affordable kitchen design
  • cozy design
  • warm and welcoming kitchen
  • a space for creativity / a space to create
